Sea Turtle

Throughout time turtles have had great meaning in religion and mythology. As a symbol for deliberation and persistence they were highly esteemed and admired as divinities in many cultures. Unfortunately sea turtles are still offered as a delicacy in some places and cheap trashy souvenirs are made from the tortoise-shell. Even the eggs of the threatened sea turtle species are collected and sold as aphrodisiacs or special delicacy. Thus sea turtles are an endangered species.

Sea turtles belong to the amphibians, their current appearance is almost unchanged for approx. 150 million years. They spend the majority of their life in the sea and only come ashore to lay their eggs in the sand.

Costa Rica is home to five species of sea turtles: the Green Turtle, the Hawksbill, the Olive Ridley, the Leather Turtle and the Logghead. There is no place in the world where can better observe the females as they come ashore to dig their nests in the sand. The 35 kilometer long beach of Tortuguero is the most important breeding ground for the Caribbean Green Turtle. The future of this wonderful creature lays in our hands.
